How a class works

What actually happens in class.

  1. 1. Prayer and breath

We start by arriving. Three Oms, a short opening prayer, then one or two pranayamas to slow the breath and bring you into the room.

Never chanted Om before? Here's how. Nobody's judging.

  2. 2. Warming the body

Pawanmuktasana frees up every joint, then Surya Namaskara in the morning or an easy floor warm-up at night. Feeling stiff is fine. Stiff is where we start.

  3. 3. Flow and rest

An asana flow, sometimes gentle, sometimes a bit spicier. Then the best part: relaxation, meditation or Yoga Nidra.

  4. 4. Closing prayer

Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, a prayer that everyone be well. Then Hari Om, and back to your day a little lighter.

Carla seated in Sukhasana on her navy mat, hands resting on her knees, in her practice room.

Hi, I'm Carla.

I teach traditional Hatha and Vinyasa, the way I learnt it at the Bodhi School of Yoga in Hyderabad, India. I'm now finishing my 300-hour advanced training with the same school, because there's always more to learn.

Every class is live from my practice room, never a recording. I can see you, I'll learn your name, and I'll help you find the version of each pose that works for your body today.

My navy mat came home with me from Chiang Mai, where my training began. These days it shares the floor with a new white one.

Try it for two weeks.

Questions

What will yoga actually do for me?

Give it a few weeks of regular practice and the good stuff starts to show. You relax properly, your focus lasts past lunch, your energy doesn't crash at 3 pm, and your digestion keeps moving. Muscles, joints and bones get stronger and happier. Your mind gets steadier too, so the chaos around you doesn't stick the way it used to. Patanjali called it calming the restless mind. I call it feeling like yourself again.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. Classes are built for beginners, and I'll give you options so there's always a version that works for you. If you think you're not flexible enough for yoga, you're exactly who I teach.

What do I need at home?

A mat or folded blanket, two yoga blocks, a glass of water and a quiet corner with room to stretch your arms. No blocks? Two firm books or a firm cushion do the job. Blocks bring the floor closer to you, like sitting on one in a deep squat (Malasana), so every pose has an option that suits your body.

How challenging are the classes?

Some days are gentle, and some flows get a bit stronger. Rest whenever you want. If a pose isn't happening today, stay in the one before it and keep breathing. That still counts. After stronger rounds we always cool down before sitting: a slow walk around the mat, one hand on the chest and one on the belly, inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.

What if I have an injury or a health concern?

Tell me before your first class. You're welcome with an injury, as long as you can sit on the floor and stand up on your own. Ahimsa, non-harming, comes first: nothing here should hurt. Chair yoga for people with limited mobility is on my list for the future.

Do I need my camera on?

Yes, always. I need to see you from head to toe on your mat so I can help with alignment and keep you safe. Messy room? I promise I'm only looking at your feet and your spine. No camera, no class.

Why practise online instead of in a studio?

Because you can practise from pretty much anywhere: your bedroom, the backyard, the gym, a park, or a hotel room on holiday. No commute, no parking, and you still get a real teacher who sees you and helps you live. As you learn the Sanskrit names, I'll simply call out the asana and guide you from there. Someone from your household is welcome to join you on the same screen, as long as you're both in view.

How do I breathe during class?

Inhale and exhale through the nostrils, unless a pranayama asks for something different. That's half the magic. More in Practice notes.

How does a live online class work?

Book on Momoyoga and your class link arrives by email 30 minutes before class. Open it on a laptop, tablet or phone, roll out your mat and join. Camera on, water nearby, and you're set.

What does it cost?

The intro fortnight is $25: every live class for 14 days, for new students, once per person. After that, a casual class is $12. The Sunday meditation is free. You pay when you book on Momoyoga.
